All Signs Point to Success

Vasquez’ “Sign” Steals Show at City College Class Film Festival: "SIGN" News

April 27, 2006

By Wilson Little, Staff Writer

There was a buzz in the air at the City College television studio last night. RTV 122 Class Film Festival is typically a time for aspiring directors to present their current projects. For City Band Productions’ own Mirna Vasquez, it was a chance to show off. Her debut film “Sign” was the jewel of the ball.

“Students should treat the projects professionally, as they would any production.” Instructor Don Blake said. “(They) should take it seriously because it is training for future endeavors.”

Vasquez certainly took this project seriously.  Together with her Band, she put together one of this season’s most notable films. “Sign” was the last tape to play on the night and after the final credits rolled, and the lights came back up, the class had nothing but positive things to say.

The students raved about the story, visuals and overall production value; most notably, the outstanding editing and cinematography. Vasquez credited City Band founder Ramon Vasquez for his experience and expertise.

“He’s taken the class before.” The first-time director said. “I didn’t even touch the camera.”

Blake commended her for putting all of the pieces together to produce such a successful project.

“Sometimes that’s how it is.” Blake said. “It is your job to assemble the right crew for your film. That includes picking a cinematographer that you think is right for the project. You obviously did, so good job.”

Next up for the Band, it’s back to the editing suite.  They will be tinkering with the details while finalizing the Sign director’s cut and preparing for the premiere.  For now, Vasquez can breathe a sigh of relief as she has successfully passed her first public screening. It didn’t hurt to have her Instructor respond so positively, either.

“I am very pleased.”  Blake said. “Overall, outstanding job, I am very impressed.”

City Band Calls it a Wrap

Sunday Marathon Marks Final Day of Shooting: "SIGN" News

April 24, 2006

By Wilson Little, Staff Writer

It was a long day, but they got it all in. After a grueling 15-hour day, first-time director Mirna Vasquez wrapped shooting on "Sign." With all of their shots now in the can, they can turn their attention to editing the raw footage in preparation for viewing on Wednesday night.

"It was just a long day." Mirna said after the shoot.

The City Band crew started the day in Balboa Park at 8:30 A.M., with two-shots with Asmar and Gehrig on the benches. Final shots before lunch included the challenging shots of the two running down the walkways.

Ramon commented on the location, "When I saw this place, I knew it would just work."

After a break for lunch, the crew moved to the Super 8 Motel in Mission Valley to shoot the apartment exteriors as well as the interior action and dialogue. Next up, it was on to Downtown as the crew set up for Scene 6 at 8th & C. This was the brick wall scene in which Gehrig runs from Asmar.

The weary Band then made its way back to the City College Parking Lot to snap off some more exterior shots. Fighting the setting sun, the crew was able to film scenes 2, 3, 10A, 10B and 11.

After releasing all of the non-essential crew members, the remaining crew paused for a quiet dinner.

"We knew we had more work to do," Ramon Vasquez said. "It was nice to have a quiet break to chat and relax."

The remaining crew then headed back to the Vasquez place for another hour of shooting. They were able to get in the final "payback" scene (13) before wrapping at 11:30 P.M.

"What a day, I think we're looking alright, but what a day." Ramon said after completed the required shots on the final scene.

Next up for the Band is the premier screening at the City College Film Festival on Wednesday night, when all aspiring directors will have an opportunity to show their stuff. Mirna and Ramon will be burning the midnight oil to prepare the first cut for the screening.

Friday April 14th, 2006: "SIGN" News

Scheduling and Location scouting is COMPLETE.

Cinematagrapher Ramon Vasquez Jr. spent the day visiting places around town looking to lock down the finialized locations for the shoot. After a day of negociation with several places, the locations are all but signed and delivered.

Schedules well be sent out to actors Megan Elizabeth, Asmar Muhammad, Byron Miller, Gehrig Miller, Stevan Turk and Heather Cottrell.
